The Roselle Flower, a Delicate Beauty With Special Meaning

The Roselle Flower, a Delicate Beauty With Special Meaning

The roselle flower is another favorite flower in the mallow family, which includes hibiscus and okra. In fact, the gently yellow flower with the vibrant burgundy interior looks a lot like the beautiful okra blossom.

The beautiful Roselle flower has a deep maroon center, with butter yellow petals that turn pink as they wither at day’s end.

Roselle Scientific Name

Hibiscus sabdariffa, of the hibiscus or mallow family of Malvaceae, which include the Rose of Sharon bush, okra plants and the marsh mallow plant.

Roselle Plant Hardiness Zone 8-11

If planting in the ground outside, (versus in a greenhouse), the best growing zone for the roselle flower is 8-11, with protection with frost covers as needed.

We’re in hardiness zone 7a, so we’re growing our Hibiscus sabdariffa in pots and bringing them indoors to our sunroom or cattle panel greenhouse before first frost.

We’re doing the same with our favorite Fiesta Hibiscus plant.

Q. I’m in South MS and we are getting our first frost tonight. Will it kill it?
A. Kim Nix Barton Hard to tell for sure. Our friend, Shannon’s Sweet Tooth Farm is growing her’s outdoors in AL in zone 8, so chances are yours will be okay with a frost, however wise to protect it against a hard freeze with a frost cover if you can. We’re in hardiness zone 7a and have brought ours indoors to grow on over the winter in zone.
